The Fabric
Bishna is a tactile and textured crewel work fabric with a strong linen background. The natural coloured linen is what makes Bishna different, with its open weave you can see each stitch of the ground, giving it a very natural and highly textured appearance – the fabric version of jute or sisal (but much softer!).
The delicate embroidered flowers, leaves and vines trailing across the surface of the fabric are in contrast to the rough appearance of the linen. Bishna is an interesting fabric which invites closer inspection. The embroidery uses three simple colours; cream, oatmeal and camel. As such, Bishna is a perfect fit in a neutral scheme, bringing a warmth, texture and pattern that provides a layer of detail to soften the overall effect of a neutral room.
The History
Crewel embroidery on a linen ground has been worked in Europe since the early medieval period. It is now more commonly found on a cotton background, but we wanted to include this Bishna linen in our collection because is offers something truly different to most of the fabrics on the market.
We also wanted to offer a choice for the more eco-conscious; the method of producing linen fabric from the flax plant uses less water than it does to produce the same amount of cotton.
Bishna is named after a small town in the south of the Indian region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Suitability
As a natural fibre, our linen will adapt to suit the environment of your home.
We love to see Bishna in new build oak-framed houses, often bathed in light from their contemporary glazing and well suited to a neutral scheme. We find that Bisha works beautifully with the natural wood.
Bishna is also a great fit for a contemporary home that would benefit from the addition of some character. A soft and pretty pattern with a strong texture, Bishna is a great way to add layers.
