The Fabric

Tara crewel is a blue and cream fabric on a stone coloured linen background. The design is a collection of trailing vines, stylized floral motifs and traditional curling leaves. Linen is a strong and durable natural fibre, and this linen is wonderfully soft and tactile with an elegant drape.  The blue and cream wool embroidery is thick and the stitches are deliberate, each representing the hand of the maker, with a natural quality which is impossible to replace using a precision machine.  The blue wool used in the embroidery is a stunning slate blue which you can pick out in other soft furnishings.

The History

This is a simple blue and cream fabric design influenced by the later period of crewelwork’s popularity in the early 19th Century.  The Eastern influences of the design are updated by using a contemporary palette. The natural grey background is an unusual addition to the Welland & Wye range, moving away from the more usual antique cream and tea stain coloured grounds.

Tara is an ideal choice for a calm colour palette. It can be used as part of a neutral room scheme to provide gentle pattern and an elegant touch of blue which is not overpowering. This blue and cream fabric can be lifted with a bright colour palette using pink and red, or can be calmed with a quiet colour palette of cream, stone and white.

The beauty of this blue and cream fabric lies in the embroidery, which stands out against the stone background, elevating the fabric to a very special work.

Suitability

As a natural fibre, Tara will accommodate the fluctuations of temperature and moisture levels in both period and modern homes.  Tara is suitable for upholstered occasional and statement chairs, bedheads and chaises.  As a window dressing, Tara can be used for curtains, pelmets and roman blinds.  For soft furnishings, Tara makes luxurious cushions and bedspreads.

if you looking for a darker blue or would like to make more of a statement with your curtains try our Manaspal blue and cream fabric, using a darker range of blues, enlivened by a touch if cinnamon.

Tara is named after Tara Hama, a small village of 250 households in the Kashmir region in India where our crewel is made and where crewel has been traditionally made since the 19th Century
