The Fabric

Chenab is a classic green and cream fabric; a hand-embroidered crewel for curtains, blinds and all soft furnishings. The cotton backcloth, woven in a soft cream, is the perfect setting for the intricate cross-stitch embroidery, creating a flowing, natural pattern of flowers, vines and leaves in a beautiful selection of green tones.

The green shades of the embroidery in this classic green and cream fabric range from delicate grey green, building to a pale celadon, through a gentle sage green to a pair of dark moss and seaweed greens. Like all greens, the colours adapt to the changing light of your home, changing for every hour of the day.

The motifs in our green and cream fabric are large and bold, but the colours are soft and gentle. Chenab is a great way to bring pattern and texture to your room scheme without using strident colours. It makes an impact, but still works beautifully with other patterns and is a great base to bring in other colours like a dusky pink or a deep red.

Suitability

We love this green and cream fabric used with light woods, oak framed houses and painted furniture. We love to see it in a conservatory or garden room, but it works beautifully in a stylish green and cream scheme for a spare room, or as part of a more eclectic scheme in a living room or bedroom.

We have created a jumbo cushion for a bench or a bed bolster, with a luxuriant trim. Check out the cushion shop for details.

If you are set on greens but you need a green and cream fabric with a stronger tone, which will work well with darker wood furniture, beams or a historical home, try our Llawasdar crewel.

The History

Our fabric is named after the Chenab River which flows through Pakistan and India, the region where it is hand embroidered by artisans who follow in the footsteps of their forebears. Generations of skilled families who have crafted in this area for hundreds of years.

The region is now home to the Chenab bridge, the highest bridge in the world, which will open to traffic in the next year. It is hoped that this feat of engineering will help connect between this isolated area of India and the rest of the country, and perhaps soothe some of the political troubles that Kashmir has experienced in the past.
